Merzbau Revisited:
Virtual Collaborative Sculpture and Augmented Reality workshop
MERZBAU REVISITED
workshop
2020
Workshop Leader: Helena Lukasova
Participants: Barbora Cicoňová, David D'Ostilio, Andrea Dudášová, Vítězslav Homolka, Christina Karababa, Veronika Lukášová, Michal Mitro and Celina Rosas Romero
I was asked to prepare and lead the workshop. Thinking about the topic I turned to one of my favorite pieces of art is Schwitters Merzbau / the structure which occupied his living space evolving and changing for years up to Schwitters escape to Norway in the beginning of WWII. The house was destroyed by Ally bombing in the end of the war, only few photos and memories of Merzbau survived. I tried to incorporate the principle of evolving and changing a creation during the process. The virtual digital 3d creation became the embodiment of the dialog between artists.
The outcome was uncertain, no one had the control. It was very joyful experience to work on a piece in the evening and to find its modification in the morning. The Dada moment was part of the process and I am sure the participants enjoyed it as much as I did.
MERZBAU REVISITED was organized by Vasulka Kitchen Brno - Center for New Media Art. The outcomes of the workshop were put on display in the augmented reality attached to the existing physical environment through image markers
around Brno, CZ. The virtual sculptures were placed in other cities around the world thanks to participants who provided photos as markers / Brooklyn NYC, London, Dü sseldorf, Mexico City, Bratislava. At the time of the travelrestriction due to pandemic the workshop was great experience of working together and displaying the outcomes of our collaborative effort in different places around the world.
